Washington warned that martial law should be temporary and not mess up the temporary alias democracy .
A spokesman for the U.S. State Department said Jen Psaki , the U.S. government concerned about the political crisis in Thailand and called on all parties to respect democratic principles , including respect for freedom of speech .
" We know that the Royal Thai Military announced that the declaration of martial law is not a coup . We hope that the military will honor its commitment to make this temporary action to prevent violence , and not to destabilize democracy , " said Psaki as quoted by AFP news agency on Tuesday ( 20 / 5/2014 ) .
"The United States strongly believes that all parties should work together to resolve differences through dialogue and find a way forward . Developments emphasize the need to determine the selection of Thai people's wishes , " he said .
The situation in Thailand is getting heated up after anti-government demonstrators vowing to overthrow the interim government and the Prime Minister of Thailand , Boonsongpaisan . The call triggered a strong reaction from the supporters of the government or the mass ' Red Shirt ' . They warn of civil war if the government is overthrown .
On this basis , the Thai military eventually impose martial law . Under the Thai constitution , the military has the right to establish martial law - which authorizes the military to control the security of the entire region - if it is urgent and necessary .
Last week , the Thai army commander General Prayuth Chan - O - Cha warned that the military will come down immediately if violence continues in Thailand . The warning came after three people were killed in shootings and grenade attacks that targeted anti-government protesters in Bangkok .
